What is DICOM Heartbeat?

The DICOM Heartbeat is a utility that prevents the studies from being sent to an offline station. It sends a DICOM Ping to the remote station every 10 minutes and verifies its status. The results of these tests are visible in the Connection Status column, found in the station list.

If the station is up and responding to the pings then its status is visible as ON-SERVICE. If the DICOM Pings are failing, the status of the station becomes OFF-SERVICE. If the DICOM Heartbeat is not enabled for a particular station, its status will appear as UNKNOWN.

When a push is attempted to a station that is offline, the data will be queued, but the system will not attempt to send it until the remote station comes online.
