Gamma Correction

Medical displays are typically calibrated using automatic calibration software. These displays do not require additional gamma correction through Microsoft Windows. Commercial color displays do not have such tools available, but may be calibrated manually. To perform a manual calibration you will need to do the following:

  1. Open a study displaying a grayscale test pattern or a representative diagnostic image set.
  2. Click View > Gamma Correction.

The modifications that can be made are as follows.

Gamma, Contrast and Brightness may be configured for each display. Drag this window from one monitor to the next to store settings for each monitor. Many commercial display adapters only support a single configuration for all connected displays, while others only support configuration for the first monitor. Please check your display adapter specification if settings are not taking effect.

Adjust the Gamma, Contrast and Brightness slider until you are pleased with the display of images. Adjustments should take effect immediately. Normally, increasing Gamma will have the most significant effect. Once the gamma curve matches the internal gamma curve of your display, the image should display its maximum range of grayscale.

  1. Click Reset to adjust the Windows default settings.
  2. Close the Gamma Correction window when finished.
