How Do I Burn a Patient Disc?

Often it is desirable to burn specific studies to a CD/DVD.

To burn a CD or DVD:

  1. Insert a blank CD-R/RW or a DVD into the disc drive.

  2. Select the desired study/studies from the Search or Worklist screen. Studies that are selected will be highlighted in blue. To select multiple studies hold down the Ctrl or Shift key.

    Note that you can burn studies using the BurnCD tool from the Emergency Access screen (if you do not have the privilege to view studies from the Search/Worklist screens) in PowerReader, provided you meet the following criteria:

    • You should have the Emergency Access privilege enabled for your role
    • You must have tried viewing studies from the Emergency Access screen in the past one hour before you try burning the studies

  3. Click on the Write the Study to a disc icon located on the toolbar at the top of the Search/Worklist screen.

  4. The Media Tools App dialog appears.

  5. Click the BurnCD tool on the Media Tools App. The Burn Options form is displayed.

  1. Check off the options to select desired objects to burn on the disc and then click Burn Study.

    Note: The Presentation States Burn option can enabled or disabled by using the Configuration Entry "CD Burn Always Burn In Presentation State". To enable the Presentation States Burn Option, perform the following steps:

    • You need to un-check the "CD Burn Always Burn In Presentation State" configuration entry in the System Configuration.

    • In the Burn Options Form, note that the Presentation States burn option is not yet available for selection.

    • Un-check the Burn In Presentation States Burn Option in the Burn Options form. This would make the Presentation States Burn Option available for selection.

    • You can now select the Presentation States Burn option. The primary difference between the Burn In Presentation States and Presentation States Burn options is that selecting the Burn In Presentation States Burn option enables you to burn a CD with Presentation States by default while enabling the Presentation States Burn option helps you have control on Burning a CD with or without Presentation States. Note: When burning uncompressed tomosynthesis image to disc, annotations added on single frames in 3D Tomo series may not be burned due to space constraints on the disk.

  2. The Remember my selection option can be checked if desired. When this option is enabled, the system will remember the options selected and check them the next time the dialog opens. A confirmation dialog is displayed.

  3. Once the burn process is complete, the CD/DVD ejects from the disc drive.

    If you try to burn studies that have already been deleted by a different user, the system displays the error message "No Objects found to burn".

  4. The CD/DVD consists of PowerReader CD Viewer, which allows users to view the studies on another system. The CD/DVD will work on any computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP or newer. RamSoft software does not need to be installed on those computers. The Viewer and associated Viewer files can be included on the disc by checking the "Viewer" checkbox.

    The included DICOM Viewer on the disc is only compatible with Windows. If the Viewer option is unchecked, studies are burned as DICOM objects in the standard DICOM folder hierarchy. If users are not on Windows or would like to use another DICOM Viewer, they can can navigate to the dicomdir folder on the disc with their own Viewer to view the images.

Note: When you burn a study with existing reports (Word, TXT, HTML), the reports are converted and displayed as PDF in the CD viewer.

You can close the Media Tools application by clicking on the Close icon .

You can access the Media Tools settings by clicking the Settings icon . Once you click this icon, the Setup dialog appears.

The Recorder field displays the current CD/DVD recorder being used. If you have multiple recorders being used, you can select the desired recorder from the drop-down menu.

You can choose to write the CD/DVD at varying speeds. The following write speed options are available: Fastest, Fast, Medium, Slow and Slowest.

Compressing images saves space on disk. If you are not sure how the image would get rendered after compressing, you can select the Burn Uncompressed Image option to ensure maximum compatibility.

Burning studies with Primera Robot CD burner​

The Media Tool app in PowerReader supports burning studies from Primera Robot CD burner. A Primera Robot CD burner can burn a CD and print a label on the CD in a single job. This eliminates manual steps and the possibility of potential labeling errors.

Note: You must be licensed to burn CD/DVDs with Primera.

Once you set up a Primera Robot CD burner, it will constantly start monitoring the Job Request folder (termed "hot folder") for any job request (study/studies selected to burn to a CD/DVD) that gets submitted. The "hot folder" is where in all the job requests to be run get queued and specifies the image data to burn, the label to print and the number of copies to be created. RamSoft's Implementation team would set up the "hot folder" for Primera to monitor any upcoming job requests.

The moment it finds a job request, it processes it and burns a study into the CD and prints a label on the CD. Once you start burning studies, the media tool splits the studies on the basis of patient names and burns studies for one patient per CD/DVD. If there are multiple studies for a patient, the media tool app consolidates them so that they get burnt on to the same CD/DVD.

To burn studies using the Primera Robot CD burner, perform the following steps:

  1. Ensure that the Primera SDK components are installed in your local machine and Primera Integration is enabled.

  2. In PowerReader, select the studies to burn and click the BurnCD tool on study desktop toolbar. The MediaTools application appears.

  3. Select the studies to burn and click on the BurnCD icon on the MediaTools toolbar. The "Submit Study to Primera completed" confirmation message appears.

  4. You can see that the selected study folder along with the .jrq file are available in the specified Primera Root folder ready to be picked up by Primera CD Burner. The CDs would burn along with the label.
