Procedure Codes
Procedure Codes are numbers or alphanumeric codes used to identify specific health interventions taken by medical professionals. By default, the system is loaded with CY 2020 procedure codes. However, procedure codes can be created, viewed and edited.
You can search for an existing Procedure Code by entering the description or the Procedure Code in the search text field at the top. Entering the procedure code or description will filter the entries in the table and display only Procedure Codes which match the given criteria. If a Procedure Code cannot be found and must be added, these steps should be followed to add new procedure codes into the list:
When creating or updating a study, users can add duplicate Procedure Codes to the study. This is useful particularly when posting multiple charges for a study.
How to Create a New Procedure Code
- Click RIS Settings > Procedure Codes. Procedure Codes Setting screen appears as shown below.

- Click New. A new row is added to the existing list.
- Type the identification code in the Procedure Code text field.
- Type the cost to be charged by the RVU technician in the RVU Technical text field. While you click on RVU Technical text field, the row in which you are typing data will be moved in ascending order within the existing list.
- Type the cost to be charged by the RVU professional in the RVU Professional text field.
- Type a detailed note about the procedure in the Description text field.
- Ensure, Active checkbox is checked. It denotes that the procedure code you are creating remains active. By default, the Active checkbox is checked when you click New. If unchecked, the code will not be available for selection in the Study Info form.
- Check the Critical checkbox to set a flag if the procedure code is vital and crucial.
- Click the Alert Message text field to type a note on the criticality/complications. Upon click, the fonts in the entire row you are working will be changed into red color. This indicates that the procedure code you have created holds top priority.
- Type a special note in the Alert Message text field. By default, all Reading Physicians, Performing Physicians, Performing Technologists and Transcriptionsts have been granted privilege to view this.
- Check the Billable checkbox if this procedure need to be charged. Non-billable procedure codes are not available in the Fee Schedules.
- Check the Office Visit checkbox if the patient need to visit the doctor's office.
- Click the drop-down in the Education Resource URL column and type the website address which could provide more information like cause, symptoms, severity, treatment, side effects, etc., about the disease. The purpose of providing the website address to the patient is to educate about the disease.
- Seen By Physician is an indicator/flag to be set only upon physically examining the patient by the physician.
- Click Save to save the changes.
Assigning a Study with a Critical Alert Procedure Code
Assign a study with critical alert procedure code. Upon completion, the application will displays a confirmation screen as shown below.
Click Yes to proceed. The application associates the critical alert procedure code with the study.
Reopen the same study. The application displays Critical Test Alert icon prompting in Study Desktop Toolbar .
Click the Critical Test Alert icon. The application displays a popup screen as shown below.
It is possible to have more than one procedure code with alerts in a study. In this case, the procedure code alerts will be displayed in numerical order. Critical alerts will be in red while non critical alerts will be displayed in black.
