How Can Studies be Opened by a Barcode Reader?

Some facilities use a barcode reader to scan a bar code on the patient folder jacket. The result of this scan can be used to automatically load a study into the Study Desktop. In order for this to work, certain modifications have to be made in the Setup Workflow dialog.

The Default Worklist/Search Tab needs to be set to the Search value. However, this will modify the setting for all users. If the site is using the Worklist, this is not a good option. If the barcode reader will only be used by a limited number of users, their individual Default Search Screen preference can be overwritten. Information on this can be found in the Advanced User Administration section.

Once the search screen has been set as the default for the desired users, the Automatically open study upon unique query option must be checked. This will cause the study found as a result of a barcode reader scan to be automatically loaded into the Study Desktop.
